Left Lane Book Club

I've been wanting to expand my Commuting Sucks post with a series covering the various types of drivers I encounter day in and day out.  I've been stuck because I really didn't know where to start.  Further more, there wasn't really any inspiration, that is until today.

Today I encountered a slow driver in the left hand lanes.  These lanes are typically for the faster drivers.  You know, those who are actually doing the speed limit or slightly over.  It's better that the fast drivers stay left because the exits are on the right.  People in the fast lane need not worry about people slowing for an exit ramp or people coming to speed from an on ramp.  No, they need to be worried about the guy I saw today, we'll call him Jim.

A Weekend of Overindulgence

√ - Booze
√ - Buffets
√ - Betting

We went gambling this weekend in Tunica. It was my first experience at a casino and I loved it. We actually didn't drink that much, but with being a non-drinker, any drinking is something. I did a lot better with the gambling than I thought I would, but I still lost a bit. I ate way too much, but it was too tempting with these ridiculously large buffets. I'll definitely go back sometime.

One Chili to Rule Them All

I just wanted to share my chili recipe for all to try. Several people have asked for the recipe, so here it is.

SQL Formatting

I'm tired of seeing poorly formatted SQL statements. I used to be a poor offender of this, but I have seen the light. I'm over the whole "stuff it all into one line" mentality. Less lines is not always better. I've recently turned my attention to my SQL formatting.

Have you ever seen some SQL that looked like this?

select * from my_table where my_primary_key=72;

Of course you have, now how about something like this?

select column_1,column_2,column_3 from my_table, my_other_table where my_primary_key=72
AND my_table.my_primary_key=my_other_table.my_primary_key;

It's pretty damn unreadable right? Does this look better to you?

SELECT
	column_1,
	column_2,
	column_3
FROM
	my_table,
	my_other_table
WHERE
	my_primary_key=72
	AND
	my_table.my_primary_key=my_other_table.my_primary_key;

SQL is just like any programming language. Readability helps maintainability. From this day forward I've decided to make sure that I do a good job of formatting and *gasp* commenting my SQL.
